The risk for software companies in a highly competitive market is that their marketing presentations must always “hit the mark” in order to inspire the customer. There is no place for losing listeners due to boring and ineffective presentations either in content or delivery. Software executives must start to break the cult of the average presentation habits. It is crucial to understand and put into practice proven communication skills of authentic presence and voice that will maximize results every time.

One trend I’ve noted recently is the expression, “Does that make sense?” often used by a speaker during a conversation — or a presenter during a presentation — to check whether the listener or audience has understood or appreciated what the speaker has just said.

via Never Ask ‘Does That Make Sense?’ – Jerry Weissman – Harvard Business Review.

Good post on filler words from HBR. I’ve noticed that I’m using “does that make sense” more now than I used to. I’ll watch for it! You should too.

Friday fun: certified/ certifiable

Posted by: Steve Johnson on April 2, 2010 | Comments (0)

Francis writes,

I had the pleasure to get the certification programme in Practical Product Management.  I'm still getting a lot of value from the best practices.  Thank you for that. In a presentation I mentioned that our entire PM group is "Certified" by Pragmatic Marketing.  Also, I use the Pragmatic Marketing "Certified" banner in my mail etc…

My colleague from London then pointed to me that "Certified" means to be Declared Legally Insane in UK…

Sure enough, according to Cambridge Dictionaries online, to certify is:

to state officially that someone is mentally ill. As in:
As a young man, he had been certified and sent to a hospital for the mentally ill.

However, the same dictionary defines certified as: having a document that proves that you have successfully finished a course of training.

So product managers who complete Practical Product Management can be certified or else we'll have to certify that you're insane.
